Bengal Cat Genetics: Understanding Rosette Patterns
The Science of Rosette Patterns
Bengal cats are renowned for their exotic, wild-looking coats that feature distinctive rosette patterns. These rosettes are reminiscent of their wild Asian Leopard Cat ancestors and are one of the most sought-after coat patterns in the feline world.
Types of Rosettes
There are several types of rosette patterns found in Bengal cats:
- Arrowhead Rosettes - Triangular shapes pointing towards the tail
- Paw Print Rosettes - Open on one side, resembling a paw print
- Donut Rosettes - Complete circles with a darker outline
- Clouded Rosettes - Large, flowing patterns similar to clouded leopards
Genetic Factors
The rosette pattern is influenced by multiple genes, including the Agouti gene which controls the distribution of pigment in individual hairs. Selective breeding over generations has enhanced these patterns, creating the spectacular coats we see in modern Bengals.
